Just Make the Lemonade: Why Simplicity Is a Nervous System Skill

Modern life has an interesting habit. It takes things that once worked perfectly well. It then turns them into problems to be solved.

Lemonade is a good example.

What was once sugar, water, and lemons has transformed into an entire category. It is carbonated, flavoured, fortified, rebranded, and marketed as improvement. The result isn’t clarity. It’s choice overload.

This same pattern shows up repeatedly in people experiencing chronic stress, work-related trauma, or emotional exhaustion.

When everything becomes complicated, people stop trusting themselves.

In therapeutic and coaching work, I often meet individuals. They believe they need a new system. Some think a new mindset or a complete overhaul is necessary to function better.

In reality, most already possess effective coping processes — they’re just buried under noise, pressure, and unrealistic expectations.

Simplicity is not a lack of sophistication.
It is a form of regulation.

From a nervous system perspective, excessive choice and constant optimisation keep the body in a low-grade state of alert. Decision fatigue increases, self-doubt grows, and people begin to interpret overwhelm as personal failure rather than environmental overload.

What helps is not adding more strategies, but reducing cognitive and emotional load.

In practice, this looks like:

  • returning to familiar, repeatable routines
  • using existing skills deliberately rather than searching for new ones
  • removing unnecessary layers of performance and self-surveillance

It also requires a cultural reframe.

We often mistake complexity for intelligence and busyness for effectiveness. Yet the people who recover best from burnout, work stress, or prolonged pressure are rarely the ones who “do more”. They are the ones who learn to do less, more consistently.

There is also a quiet grief beneath this — a remembering of when things felt manageable.

I grew up in a time when glass bottles were returned and reused. You brought something back, and you were rewarded. It was practical, not performative. We understood reuse, repair, and simplicity instinctively.

Somewhere along the way, we stopped trusting that model — in systems, and in ourselves.

The invitation here is not nostalgia.
It is discernment.

What has been over-engineered that doesn’t need fixing — only simplifying?

For people under sustained stress, simplicity is not laziness or avoidance. It is a stabilising intervention. It reduces load, restores agency, and helps the nervous system settle enough for meaningful change to occur.

You don’t need people to sparkle.
You need them steady.

And often, the most effective place to begin is with something that already works — quietly, reliably — like lemonade.
