World Cancer Day: Show Love Through Simple Acts

  • by

When my husband was fighting cancer, I discovered that compassion doesn’t always sound like “I’m praying for you.” Sometimes it smells like lasagne.

Everyone means well when illness strikes. But the truth is, people often disappear because they’re scared of saying the wrong thing. The silence is deafening. And yet, it’s the small acts — the cooked meal, the lift to chemo, the phone call that asks when a good time to talk? — that carry people through.

On World Cancer Day, it’s tempting to post a ribbon and call it awareness. But awareness starts in the kitchen, not on social media. It’s about noticing who in your circle might need a meal, a message, or just your quiet company.

If you’ve ever felt helpless watching someone suffer, here’s your invitation:
Don’t ask what you can do — say what you will do.
Be specific. “I’ll pick up your kids on Wednesdays.” “I’ll drop soup by tomorrow.” “I’ll drive you to your next appointment.”

You don’t need to fix anything; you need to show up.

Because compassion, at its heart, isn’t pity. It’s a partnership.
And sometimes, it comes baked in cheese.

“Every step you take, no matter how small, is a step toward a brighter, more balanced future.
Trust in your journey, and remember, progress is progress—no matter the pace.” — Cheryl Paris
