Simplify Now: A Guide to Outragous Joy Over Stress

  • by

As the 25th of December creeps closer, life seems to move faster — wrapping, cooking, spending, smiling. For many of us, Christmas can feel less like a celebration and more like a full-time job with glitter.

But here’s the thing — Christmas doesn’t have to feel that way.

It doesn’t have to be loud, perfect, or Instagram-ready.

Sometimes, the most peaceful thing you can do is slow down and ask:

What does this season actually mean to me?

The Lesson Life Whispered

When I was growing up, Christmas wasn’t that magical movie moment people talk about. It was tense, performative, and full of conditions.

I can only remember one truly happy Christmas — the year I got Gordon the Gopher. I was over the moon.

Every other year felt like I was being marked on how much I’d “earned” the right to be celebrated.

By seventeen, I somehow managed to have four Christmas dinners in one day. I visited my parents, grandparents, a friend, and my boyfriend’s family. Chaotic, but so so lovely.

Now, years later, I don’t have a Christmas tree again. But this time, it’s not from pain — it’s from peace.

I haven’t given adult presents in about a decade.

I still give to my children and grandchildren, but for everyone else?

My gift is how I show up — consistently, kindly — the other 364 days of the year.

The Mirror It Holds Up

Maybe you can relate.

Maybe for you, Christmas is a mixed bag — part joy, part tension, part pretending everything’s fine.

For many, it’s a season that stirs up old memories. Tricky family dynamics also come into play. Additionally, there’s the pressure to do everything and feel everything all at once.

We’ve built this idea that Christmas is when we must be at our best. We feel the need to be generous, sociable, and sparkling. Meanwhile, most of us are just trying to stay sane.

And yet, the real spirit of Christmas — connection, compassion, kindness — was never meant to be confined to December.

It’s supposed to guide how we move through the world throughout the year.

The Choice You Make Today

Perhaps this Christmas is your opportunity to redefine what the holiday means to you. This opportunity is available right here, right now.

If you want to skip the tree — skip it.

If you want to give yourself the gift of peace and quiet, please do.

If you want to celebrate your way, that’s enough. You could curl up with a good book. You might enjoy a long walk. You could laugh with people who make your soul exhale.

Because Christmas isn’t about performance.

It’s about presence.

The Real Gift you can give

As we head into the holidays, remember this:

You don’t need a special day to be kind, to love deeply, or to make someone’s life a little lighter.

You’re already doing that — every time you show up as you.

You may celebrate big, small, or not at all. May you find moments of stillness, laughter, and love that feel real.

Season’s Greetings, my Amazing, Brilliant, Gorgeous, Wonderful friends.

And remember — progress is progress, no matter the pace.

Every step you take, no matter how small, is a step toward a brighter, more balanced future.
Trust your journey — progress is progress, no matter the pace. Cheryl Paris
